Özcan HIDIR / The Orientalist Methodology of ‘Dating Hadiths’

Abstract: The methods which have been used to date hadiths by western scholars since the end of nineteeth century (XIX.) are very developed and detailed. Nevertheless, some methods seem to be more reliable than others. These methods, in this article I have classified them into four groups: 1. Dating hadiths on the basis of the matn (Ignaz Goldziher-Marston Speight), 2. dating hadiths on the basis of the collections where hadiths appear (Joseph Schacht, G. H. A. Juynboll), 3. dating hadiths on the basis of the isnâd (Joseph Schacht, G. H. A. Juynboll, Micheal Cook), 4. dating hadiths on the basis of the isnâd and matn (Harald Motzki). In this article, these methods will be studied in detail.
