Seyit AVCI / Sufis’ Criteria of Determining the Soundness of Hadith: A Study on Ismail Hakki Bursawi
Abstract: Textual analysis and the reliability of the chain are two important issues in the methodology of hadith. What is important for the scholars of hadith is not the hadith book in which the hadiths are reported but rather the reliability of the chain of the hadith. As far as the the Sufis are concerned, the the authenticity of a hadith depends on some criteria and conditions other than the chain of the hadith. They regarded the hadiths reported by a Sufi in his book as sound, leaving aside textual analysis of these hadith in detail. Ismail Hakki Bursawi (d. 1137/1725) belongs to the latter. In this article, we will analyze Sufi approach to the authenticity of hadith in general and that of Bursevi’s in particular.
