Mehmet EFENDiOGLU / On the Nature of the Critiques levelled at Khalid b. al-Waleed

Abstract: For the muslim umma, the Companions of the Prophet are in a prestigious position in religion on the ground that they were praised by the Prophet himself, they were warned by the Prophet if they were mistaken and they were educated by the Prophet himself. Qur’an and hadith testify their merit and superiority. Therefore, Sunni scholars in general and scholars of hadith in particular, the Companions of the Prophet were considered a trustworthy generation. This does not necessarily mean that they are immune from sin and mistake. Needless to say, some of them had sinned or had done wrong, but they repented. It is seen that some prejudiced people and sects, reliying on some fabricated hadiths and forged accounts, criticized some of the Companions of the Prophet -sometimes all of them- and even accused them of blasphemy. In this article, the life and personality of the well-known Companion of the Prophet, Khalid b. Walid will be examined. He reached great achivements in his life, took role in the spread of Islam and was praised by the Prophet, on the one hand, and was criticised due to some of his activities, on the other. In the article, first his life and the role he played were explained in detail; secondly the accounts in Islamic literature which are thought to be the basis of the criticism against him will be analyzed.
