Nimetullah AKIN / Historical Portrait of Mary in Early Literature of Islamic History (Deutsch)
Abstract: Early literature of Islamic history contains information about previous prophets (qisas al-anbiya) especially about Mary; however it presents neither a systematic pattern nor a cohesive viewpoint. This fact gives the impression that the relevant information is collected from various sources. It is possible to find, about the same story of Mary, two different narratives which indicate two different states of mind. For instance Mary is portrayed in a narrative as a proud and joyful person for being mother of Jesus. However in another narrative Mary is described being ashamed of having a baby out of marriage. It can be argued that each narrative reflects the mind of its source. This article aims to analyse the historical portrait of Mary in Kitab bad al-halq wa-qisas al-anbiya of Umara b. Wasima al-Farisi (d. 289/902) and Tarih ar-rusul wa-l-muluk of Muhammad b. Jarir al-Tabari (d. 310/923) and furthermore to identify their original sources. In the case of Mary the most important source of information, apart from the Quran and the prophetic sayings, seems the Gospel of Jacob from apocryphal literature of New Testament. It appears that the information from the Gospel of Jacob is directly or indirectly quoted by the above mentioned early Islamic works.
