Kadir PAKSOY / Critical Analysis of the Sa‘laba Hadith (Story) in Sanad and Matn

Abstract: Sa‘laba b. Hatib came to the Prophet and asked for a prayer for worldly wealth. When he got wealth (sheep), he did not want to pay his religious duties (alms). Afterwards, he wanted to pay it but the Prophet and his successors did not accept it. This narration is very common among people and is reported to be the cause of the revelation of the Qur’anic verse of Surat al-Tawba 9/75. In addition, this hadith (story) is commonly used by the Religious author-izers in the mosques as a way of triggering religious awareness. In this article, the hadith (story) of Sa‘laba is critically and closely examined.
