Yusuf Ziya KESKiN / Critical Analysis of the Hadiths About The Euphrates
Abstract: River Euphrates, the longest river in Southwest Asia, played a crucial role from antiquity till modern times in that it is used in the irrigation of cultivable lands and also as a drinking water. Due to its significance there is a mention of it in the Old Testament and the New Testament. There is also mention of River Euphrates in the Quran not in the sense of river but that of the drinking water 'which relives the drinker'. River Euphrates is mentioned in various hadiths related from the Prophet Muhammad. The hadiths transmitted by Abu Huraira and Ubayy b. Ka'b read that River Euphrates will boil down, that gold mine will emerge and that the people will fight each other for the gold and consequently 99 % of the fighters will die. These hadiths warn the believers about this danger. The hadith, which is, according to classical hadith methodology, is considered authentic, is interpreted in various ways.
