Süleyman DOGANAY / Historical Aspects of Textual and Content Analysis in Ahadith

Abstract: Ahadith has got a historical importance in addition to religious one. Because, each of ahadith attributed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) puts forward that it reflects facts and events of his period as well. Reading texts of hadith to obtain knowledge on religion and history without criticizing shows its ordinary usage because of alteration of the hadith narrators on reporting according to meaning. It is necessary to study compatibility of every passages or items in the texts of hadith into facts of the prophetic period in order to keep away from the ordinary usage of hadith. The texts of hadith, on account of its historical importance, could be criticized mainly on two points: “history in the text” and “history of the text”.
